Annual Operational Programs of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas

Natural Protected Areas (NPAs) are areas in Mexico that have not been significantly altered by human activity or that require preservation and restoration. The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP in Spanish) currently manages 185 federal NPAs and supports 382 Areas Voluntarily Destined for Conservation.

FONNOR manages and monitors the annual operating programs of six NPAs funded by the Natural Protected Areas Fund (FANP in Spanish):

  • Bahía de los Ángeles, Canales de Ballenas y Salsipuedes Biosphere Reserve
  • Isla Isabel National Park
  • Islas Marietas National Park
  • Islas Marias Biosphere Reserve
  • Marismas Nacionales Nayarit Biosphere Reserve
  • Sierra Vallejo-Rio Ameca Natural Resources Protection Areas

This project, managed by FONNOR, is notable for conducting the following actions:

  • Environmental monitoring 
  • Monitoring and technical accompaniment of turtle conservation camps
  • Waste management programs 
  • Reefs, mangroves, and tropical forests restoration
  • Forest fire prevention and fighting
  • Environmental education in rural areas
